Pilgrimage History

The Kansas American Legion and The Kansas American Legion Auxiliary in October of 1982 held the first Eisenhower Memorial Day Observance at Abilene, Kansas.  The purpose of the event is to memorialize and pay tribute to the only United States President who claimed Kansas as his home state.  This event is the joint effort of both the Kansas American Legion and its Auxiliary with the cooperation of all Legion Posts and Units and all other ancillary organizations including the 40 and 8, 8 and 40, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Riders and La Femmes.  Also, the cooperation of the Adjutant General of Kansas and supporting groups of the National Guard and the United States Army at Fort Riley.  The two most instrumental individuals in organizing the event were:  Past National Auxiliary President Dora Seymour and Past National Commander Harry G. Wiles.  The Pilgrimage, held annually on the Saturday closest to President Eisenhower's birthday (October 14, 1890) enables our legion family to remember and pay homage to this great American and beloved Kansas son.

Some highlights - in 1997, the committee unanimously agree to update the program and its format by replacing those wreaths worn and deteriorated - approximately 200, with long stem red and white silk roses.  A number of wreaths found in good condition were retained and are still laid at the place of meditation and around the fountain by distinguished guests.  In 1998, our distinguished guest list included representation from the Departments of Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma.  Past National Commander Butch Miller appointed Past National Vice Commander Jim Gravenstein to represent the organization that year.  2002 was a special time as former President George Bush attended and dedicated a new wing in the Dwight David Eisenhower Museum.

The Inaugual Prayer- January 20, 1953

Almighty God, as we stand here at this moment, my future associates in the executive branch of Government join me in beseeching that Thou will make full and complete our dedication in the service of the people in this throng and their fellow citizens everywhere.

Give us, we pray, the power to discern clearly right from wrong and allow all our words and actions to be governed thereby and by the laws of this land. Especially we pray that our concern shall be for all the people regardless of station, race or calling.

May cooperation be permitted and by the mutual aim of those who, under the concept of our Constitution, hold to differing political faiths; - so that all may work for the good of our beloved Country and for Thy glory. Amen
