The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program:

American Legion Auxiliary units in all 50 states proudly host American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, an amazing week of learning focused on responsible citizenship, leadership, and love for God and Country. Participants are assigned to mock cities and to either the "Federalist Party" or "Nationalist Party." They are immersed in learning about the political process by electing officials at all levels of state government and actively running a mock government. Assistance from dedicated American Legion Auxiliary volunteers ensures the program's non-partisan governmental, patriotic, and civic objectives are carried out through interactive learning. Though the week is filled with many learning opportunities, there is always time for fun and the formation of long-term friendships.

Since the inception of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program in 1937, nearly one million young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works. High School girls, having completed their junior year may participate in this program.

SUNFLOWER GIRLS STATE

The Department of Kansas Girls State program is known as "Sunflower Girls State." Generally, this progam is held in the first part of June each year. To get the current information regarding Sunflower Girls State, please visit its website at: www.ksgirlsstate.org. You can also follow this program on Facebook: Sunflower Girls State.

Any Girls State citizen participating in Sunflower Girls State, who is a direct descendant of a veteran, is eligible to apply for the SAMSUNG SCHOLARSHIP. However, only one citizen from each state can be named as a department finalist. Ten national winner and 10 national runners-up are then chosen from the pool of department finalists, each receiving a $10,000.00 and $5,000.00 scholarship, respectively. The remaining department finalists are guaranteed to receive a scholarship of $1,250.00.

June 8, 2017, the Sunflower Girls State Program celebrated it's 75th Year! Click the YouTube icon to view the video.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY GIRLS NATION

Two girls are selected from each American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program to attend ALA Girls Nation, a national government training program.  ALA Girls Nation "senators" meet for a week in Washington, D.C., where they run for political office, campaign for the passage of legislation and meet with state Representatives and Senators.  Capping off the week of ALA Girls Nation is often a meeting with the President of the United States at The White House.
